Both Wendell and Pauline served the community through local affairs, with Wendell becoming a volunteer fire fighter. Pauline's father, Samuel Dare, was a Civil War veteran who served on the Brookhaven Board of Trustees, eventually serving as President of the board from 1894-1897.

With the newly built sanatorium, the death rate from tuberculosis sharply declined. However, due to a lack of staff, the sanatorium closed in 1943 during World War II. By 1916, a post office and general store combination was built in Centereach where Everette Emery was appointed as postmaster. It wasn't until the 1930's that Centereach had its first solo post office built by Irma Emery. By that time, mail carrier Charles Benson was delivering mail in Centereach, Lake Grove, and Lake Ronkonkoma twice a day alongside his dog Pete.

The path ran from Port Jefferson to Patchogue in a 14-mile stretch. The biggest contributor to Bicycle Path was Albert R. Norton, who donated the right-of-way for it in front of his property in Selden to Port Jefferson. Norton himself ran Wheelman's Rest that was located in the middle of the path for cyclists in need of refreshments. The path became so successful the visitor's log had over 6,000 names recorded, spanning from all over the world. Over the summertime, Bicycle Path held various festivals and carnivals that included racing, parades, and Fire Department contests. The attached photograph for Officers and Racing Team presents James H. Rogers, Fred J. Flugrath, Clarence Ruland, H.K. Roe, Nat Roe, and Geo. H. Furman.
